Code of Ethics

IESL Code of Ethics

All members of IESL WA are bound by the Code of Ethics of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka. The code sets out the professional and ethical obligations that members must uphold in their engineering practice.

Fundamental Principles

Engineers uphold and advance the integrity, honour, and dignity of the engineering profession by:

  • Using their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare
  • Being honest and impartial, and serving with fidelity to the public, their employers and clients
  • Striving to increase the competence and prestige of the engineering profession
  • Supporting the professional and technical societies of their discipline

The Code

1. Public Safety and Welfare

Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public and shall consider environmental impact in the performance of their professional duties.

2. Professional Competence

Engineers shall perform services only in areas of their competence. Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their careers and shall provide opportunities for the professional development of those engineers under their supervision.

3. Integrity and Honesty

Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honour, integrity, and dignity of the engineering profession. They shall not engage in deception or fraud.

4. Conflict of Interest

Engineers shall act in such a manner as to avoid conflicts of interest. Engineers shall promptly disclose to their employer or client any business association, interest, or circumstance that could influence their judgement or the quality of their services.

5. Professional Conduct

Engineers shall not attempt to injure, maliciously or falsely, directly or indirectly, the professional reputation, prospects, practice, or employment of other engineers, and shall treat all persons fairly regardless of such factors as race, religion, gender, disability, age, or national origin.

6. Responsibility

Engineers shall be objective and truthful in professional reports, statements, or testimony. They shall include all relevant and pertinent information in such reports, statements, or testimony, which should bear the date indicating when it was current.

Disciplinary Matters

Any breach of the Code of Ethics may be subject to disciplinary proceedings by the IESL WA Committee in consultation with IESL Sri Lanka. Members are encouraged to report any concerns to the committee confidentially.
